Event: Reedy Race of Champions
Location: Yatabe Arena (Tsukuba City, Japan)
Date: March 1,2009

Race Reporter: Andrew Moore

After a long hiatus, the storied Reedy Off-Road Race of Champions was brought back for 2009, and at what better place than Yokomo’s Yatabe Arena. This venue has hosted several Reedy Races in years past, and numerous major events from World Championships to JMRCA races, the list goes on and on. The race drew in over 200 entries from all over; drivers from both America and Australia flew in, as well as representatives from several other countries.

JConcepts Gold compound Bar Codes were the tire for the Invitational class at this prestigious race. The flexibility of the tire to work on varying indoor conditions led to their selection for the unique Yatabe surface. This was proven by the two fastest runs of the weekend (set in Round 6 by Ryan Cavalieri and Ryan Maifield respectively) that were just two tenths apart over 5 minutes. Although the invitational class uses a very interesting format to decide the winner, this fastest round result really show how well the tires worked on the Yatabe surface for drivers with very different styles.

During the course of the 6 rounds of mains (the trademark Reedy Race format) Ryan Cavaleiri looked to be the man to beat. A bauble during one of his runs meant that the event concluded with some exciting action. Cavalieri had to put his Gold Bar Codes to the test in a clutch run to take the Invitational overall win.

JConcepts driver Ray Munday made the trek over from Australia to race in the open class and ended up making the A main in 2wd mod. Ray had never seen this surface before and his practice was little or none compared to the locals. Great run Ray!
